Immune system - How to keep holistically healthy

With all the pollution that each person is exposed to during their lifetime, it is a living testimony of what a wonderful and unique machine the human body is.  But like all machines, each body has a lifetime that is based on the care and maintenance it receives during that time as well as the type of fuel used.  With the fast paced lifestyle that has become the norm for over 80 percent of the world if not more, more and more are suffering breakdowns of the immune system; suffering from chronic illnesses or repeatedly the same flu/cold type events.  Even for the last stage of toxicity, cancer, a way to help the body recover from the medical treatments that kill the illness, but weaken the immune system overall.

So what to do?  There are many new products out in on them market that offer relief and health however, many are hyped up by marketing experts using terminology that may seem good but is just a ploy to get the consumer to buy their product.  It is clear that there should be a way of gauging how your body can run at it's best while not going to the poor house to get it there.
Today, the subject is auto immune support and a product that handles this challenge while being affordable.  This product came out in May 2012 and is already making headway in the holistic health circles.  Recommended for everyone, babies, pregnant mothers, older bodies, all bodies.  The dosage will vary for children, but the effects are quite amazing.

Remove your body's toxic burden for better health and longer life

For most people, the last third of their lives is spent managing increasingly debilitating illnesses and adverse health conditions instead of enjoying vibrant health. Part of the problem is our toxic environment. We are surrounded by thousands of man-made chemical toxins that are in our air, water and food. No matter how hard we try, we cannot avoid these toxins and many of them get in our body and stay there. These are long term poisons that increase as we age and can overwhelm our body's ability to handle them and function properly.

The heavy metal problem is real

Heavy metals including mercury, aluminum, lead, arsenic and cadmium are pervasive and our bodies hold onto those metals with resulting damage to both our immune system and everyday electrical functioning of our nervous system. Cellular communication is damaged and our DNA also is damaged resulting in poorer quality of new cells being generated. When the immune system becomes overloaded you get cancer.

Slow down the aging process

Aging is directly related to a properly functioning immune system that helps protect the quality of our DNA and the proper functioning of our body. When your immune system can't handle everything being thrown at it, all the systems in your body begin to play a different tune and your body stops functioning properly as an organism. This is NOT theory. Medical science understands how this works and is striving to fix the problems but our bodies are very complex organisms and our current health paradigm focuses on managing and curing diseases instead of prevention. It is important to protect our health and stop health challenges BEFORE they happen because they multiply and lead to poor life quality and a shorter life.

Your Protective Bubble

We all wish we could put ourselves inside a bubble to protect us from disease and aging!  Although we live longer, most people do not live healthier. Sickness and serious diseases are overwhelming our society and one out of three people will get cancer. How many people do you know with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, auto immune diseases including fibromyalgia, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and countless others? How many children to you know with birth defects or who suffer with autism or other childhood ailments that used to be uncommon?
The closest you can get to a protective bubble is this revolutionary nutraceutical from Waiora. This amazing product has many wonderful effects on our bodies including the optimization and modulation of our immune system. The product is a combination of a newly discovered method of extracting powerful beta glucan molecules from the world's most powerful healing mushroom and our newly reformulated Natural Cellular Defense systemic detoxifier product.

There has never been a nutraceutical like this and the synergy of these two proven ingredients has to be experienced to be believed!
Watch the video on our new product to understand how that product benefits our body. The new H1X1 mushroom extract was tested against one of the most powerful chemotherapy formulas (camptothecin) and was found to be equally effective BUT had no side effects.

Mega Defense Muscle Test (Applied Kinesiology) - 3 minutes

Muscle testing can reveal basic information on how your body will respond to a supplement and is used by many natural health practitioners including naturopaths and chiropractors. Although conventional medicine is skeptical of muscle testing, also called "applied kinesiology", the actual test results are interesting to experience and this form of testing has been useful for many people.

We recommend you try this test on yourself and others and see what you think. One explanation for why muscle testing works is because our body's electrical system can be negatively or positively affected by both our environment, food and other body processes. If your body senses the energy of a food, supplement or drug and determines it is good for it, transmission of nerve signals is aided which results in more muscle cells being activated and greater strength. There are many neuro-transmitters in our bodies that are involved in all body processes and when they work better and more of them are activated, we see the positive muscle test results.

Regardless of your feelings about muscle testing, it is a fun way to show your body's reaction to Mega Defense and we are happy that the test invariably shows greater strength, balance and flexibility with Mega Defense. Try it yourself!

and you will understand why the combination of NCD and this new H1X1 mushroom extraction are earth shaking news and is the most important health breakthrough of this century!

Eat Locally and well.

Curing yourself from a chronic illness such as Fibromyalgia can be a very challenge in itself and for many years I suffered through learning how to use organic foods at the rate I could or could not afford them.  In time, I learned the meaning of Organic wasn't always the words as much as the source of the food item not the label.  I started visiting local markets, talking to the grocery managers at each department at various local stores chains and personally owned, and I also became a very savvy farmers market visitor making friends and learning about the areas that I travel on a regular basis.

The quality of local grown food' has made the budget affordable and varied as well as good for my family.

It really does not take long to find out schedules and sources and with a little networking with friends and family, you can save money, while eat well for your health and the quality of your life.  In Saint Augustine for instance there are three farmer markets in town Wednesday at the St Augustine Beach Pier from 7:00 AM -12:30 PM, Saturday at the St Augustine Ampitheatre same time slot, and at the Navarre Beach Pier on Sunday.  Every one is different people and has different offerings, but they all offer local fresh fairs at very reasonable prices.  Supporting your local business owners is truly the American Way, and the relationships that you build make the memories of a life well lived a bonus to cherish through your life.

The better you care for your intake, the less toxin you collect and the better you feel and LOOK.  Physically resilient is good but longevity is best for family, and self.  After suffering for over 16 years with my chronic illness, I took my health in my own hands by researching the illness, nutrition and the art of Holistic health methods and after two years, I am self cured; feeling better than I have in over 20 years.  I would be more than happy to help you do the same.

Remember to detox daily and get sleep for the life you have worked so hard to live.

Summer Coming - Travel Smart!

Here is a great article that I came accross on Holistic health and taking responsibility for your body especially in
warm weather that will soon be here.  This means you'll need to take steps to prevent heat illness when exercising outdoors.
You can stay safe by following a number of tips from the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) and the Korey Stringer Institute (KSI) at the University of Connecticut. The institute's mission is to prevent sudden death in sport, especially from exercise-related heat stroke.

"We can't completely prevent heat illness, but the following tips can help in any instance of physical activity in the heat," Brendon McDermott, an athletic trainer at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a member of the KSI medical and science advisory board, said in a NATA news release.
"The goal is to avoid potential consequences through education of athletes, coaches, parents and health-care providers about what can be done to prevent and treat exertional heat illnesses," he added.
The tips from the NATA and KSI include:
  • Gradually increase the intensity and duration of exercise in the heat. This process, which is called heat acclimatization and takes about two weeks, prepares your body for more intense, longer duration exercise in warm conditions.
  • Make sure you take breaks during activity and get adequate rest between exercise sessions.
  • Make sure you're properly hydrated before you begin outdoor activities in warm weather. Continue drinking water or sport drinks during physical activity. If you're properly hydrated, your urine should look like lemonade. Darker urine can signify dehydration.
  • Try to exercise at cooler times of the day, such as early morning or evening.
  • Don't attempt strenuous exercise if you have signs of illness, such as fever, diarrhea or extreme fatigue. These can decrease your body's exercise heat tolerance. If you suddenly fall ill during exercise in the heat, slow down or stop.
Heat-related illnesses include exertional heat stroke, in which core body temperature rises dangerously high and can lead to seizures, confusion and death if not treated quickly, and heat exhaustion, which is marked by dizziness, profuse sweating or pale skin, headache and nausea and is usually treated with rest and fluids.

A personal note:
My apologies for being absent for the last month.  I have been helping my husband get ready to deploy to Iraq.  This is a good deployment in that fact that he is going to help rebuild and regrow the southern part of Iraq.  Remembering that it is not the people living in this area that caused the wars but the ones that in fact suffer the consequences of living outside of a democratic government.  We in the US are spoiled into a life of convenience just by our society and the security we once took for granted.  This is a very important step for the US.  My husband Bruce has a PhD in Agricultural Engineering.  He can and will make a difference over there and that gives me the courage to watch him leave.  Thank God for the ability to have a daily conversation via Skype.  I am not sure I would be able to emotionally deal with this if I couldn't talk to him at least every other day; and thus the value of a good relationship that puts friendship above all and the love of family.  I will start blogging again after he leaves in early June.  Until then please know that all is well.

Cynthia

Cooking for your health: Olive Oil - Spinach Saute recipe

Many people have started watching cooking shows and being a baby boomer, I have noted that the cooking shows on TV have slowly started to include healthier ways to cook while emphasizing flavor.  This is a great time to be alive and the internet has grown up to offer many sources of information.  Now you can Google search any recipe you want and find a mirage of choices.  In the end, it is really up to you what you are going to use to cook so the key to replacing a high end, not so good for you ingredient with another is the challenge as you don't want to sacrifice the taste or texture in the doing.  Well today the subject of Olive Oil and it's heart healthy benefits is in the spotlight.

Olive oil - Virgin cold pressed is good for you in cooking and as a skin softener.

Not just for cooking:
My aunt who was of Italian descent used to cook with it all the time and I remember spending the weekend with her before I was old enough to be in school and finding her sitting with her feet up after her bath and she smelled like olive oil.  That is when I found out the secret to her beautiful skin and hair.  She would take a warm bath and put it on her skin all over and just sit for fifteen minutes letting it absorb into the skin and hair.  She would rinse her hair and wrap it in a towel and go to bed.  Even into her late eighties her skin glowed.  She used it to treat dandruff and keep her skin soft.  But I digress from the subject of using a good olive oil.

There are so many companies that offer olive oil so you need to understand what they offer and check the age of the oil as there is a shelf life and it can go rancid after a period of time.  Spain and Italy are the main suppliers of olive oil, with Greece close behind, with California, Australia and Africa now making their presence known offering good quality olives and olive oil.

By regulation, olive is classified into five grades. Virgin olive oil is that which is obtained from the first pressing. Pure Olive Oil is a mixture of refined and virgin oil. There are other forms of olive oil used commercially and at a lower grade, but for this blog, concentrating only on the top grade is mentioned.  Virgin olive oil is not refined and the flavour varies enormously with the locality where it is grown. Other types have been refined to varying extents. Used in cooking, as salad oil, for canning sardines, and for margarine manufactures.*  The best are labelled "cold pressed", a chemical-free process involving only the first pressing of the ripe olives with only 1% acid.  Rule of thumb is the deeper the color the deeper the flavor.  Extra-Virgin olive oil is the second best having a higher percentage of acid (up to 3%).  The key is that olive oil is a monounsaturated fat which
is good for you.  High temperatures such as frying break down the oil and spoil the flavor, so consider using extra light virgin olive oil for this or Canola Oil which can stand the high heat and has no taste.  The virgin cold pressed olive oil is better for salad dressings, and low to medium heat cooking. Light Olive oil is better for baking and cooking and can withstand high-heat frying for short periods of time as used to saute' or braise.   Overall, olive oil should be stored in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months; or for those of us that have a small household or travel you can also keep it refrigerated for up to a year.  This is the reason that when you see a special on olive oil, it is always a good rule to check the date on it to assure you are spending your money on a product that has a shelf life to warrant the cost.  This is just a skimming the top on the subject of olive oil, however, it does give you a rule of thumb look on how to choose your oil, when to use it and when not to and how to care for it so you get the longest mileage for your purchase of this wonderful taste enhancing oil.

Quick Spinach Saute' Recipe:

  • Spinach (1 pound, washed and patted dry)
  • Olive Oil
  • Fresh Garlic - 2 peeled large cloves sliced thin
  • 1 large Lemon - all the zest and juice set aside
  • 1 large cleaned pound of Fresh Spinach
  • Sea Salt and Pepper to taste

In a large skillet place 1/4 cup of Olive Oil on Medium High head
When the oil is shimmering add the garlic and a pinch of salt.  Let cook till slightly golden on the edges
Place the clean spinach on top and use a pair of tongs to toss it to coat it with the now garlic infused oil.  When the spinach has started wilting add the lemon zest and juice and keep tossing until it is just wilted.

Take off of the heat and partition into plates sprinkling sea salt and pepper on the top.

This recipe is a compilation of what I have had at restaurants and family gatherings.  This goes well with grilled fish, holds up to pasta dishes of all kinds or as I often do, just as an appetizer before dinner.  This flavorful recipe yields high nutritional value, and is extremely rich in antioxidants, especially when fresh, steamed, or quickly prepared as shown above.  Spinach being a rich source of vitamin A (lutein), vitamin C, E and K and B2 and B6, magnesium, manganese, folate, betaine, iron, calcium, potassium, folic acid, copper, protien, phosphorus, zinc, niacin, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids.  In addition, opioid pepetides (rebiscolins)  found in spinach add to the benefits that help you stay strong in body and in mind.  The term you are what you eat was never truer said than in today's offerings of fast high processed food.

The key to staying on top of your health from within is in keeping your kitchen stocked with the tools and ingredients that will allow you to choose your cooking over others.  It is a good hobby to take up if you haven't already done so and yields years of culinary enjoyment with friends and family.  Sharing recipes was my way of collecting a cookbook that I now have as a file on my computer.  From scanned hand written to downloaded recipes, I have many and have shared them with my family and friends; and now you.

Anti-Bacterial Gels and Soaps vs. plain soap and holistic methods.

One real big challenge that is found in interacting with society, is the sharing of illness.  This practice is never meant to hurt others, where in reality it is a personal choice of necessity.  The person that is getting ill, or is ill, needs to get something done at work, thinks that they need to go to a meeting or don't have someone to help them get what they need.  Step in prescriptions.  Drive through is great as you give your prescription through a drawer, and pick it up the same.  This limits the contact between others however, with bacteria it is transferred by touch and transferring it by touching your eye, mouth or any open sore.  The term of wash your hands often is a very good way to keep from transferring illness beyond it's source.  This past year the holiday season brought about a viral and bacterial exchange of illness that swept across the nation of notable extent.  Viral which lasts only a few days and bacterial that latches on for weeks, made the holiday season difficult for many especially those traveling being exposed to those already ill traveling to their next destination.  So what do you do?  We are a convenience oriented society but we are also responsible for taking note of how we care for ourselves.  It is our body and we have the final decision on what we do to maintain our health.

Here are two sources to support this subject:
An individual who uses antibacterial gels will not become personally resistant to antibiotics. However, when many people overuse antibacterial gels and soaps, the bacteria develop stronger strains that are resistant to antibiotics. This is called antibacterial resistance.

In the first known comprehensive analysis of whether antibacterial soaps work better than plain soaps, Allison Aiello of the U-M School of Public Health and her team found that washing hands with an antibacterial soap was no more effective in preventing infectious illness than plain soap. Moreover, antibacterial soaps at formulations sold to the public do not remove any more bacteria from the hands during washing than plain soaps.
The study, "Consumer Antibacterial Soaps: Effective or Just Risky"" appears in the August edition of Clinical Infectious Diseases. The team looked at 27 studies conducted between 1980 and 2006, and found that soaps containing triclosan within the range of concentrations commonly used in the community setting (0.1 to 0.45 percent wt/vol) were no more effective than plain soaps and were more harmful by removing good bacteria that keeps the dermis in balance.

The old adage of You Are What You Eat, goes further by noting that what you put on you skin goes into your system and becomes a burden to your immune system making it harder for your body to protect and heal itself.  Use of the commercial antibacterial hand sanitizers has been found to bring about allergies in children and burden the immune system, showing up in blood panels.  So what can you use if you just don't have the time or place to wash your hands? What if you want to give your family a holistic way to deal with sanitizing without the harm of the chemicals in commercial products on the market?  For this purpose I share a fellow blogger's recipe that will give a smart alternative with great results.

Homemade Hand Sanitizer
yields 1 liter

1 cup glycerin
½ cup aloe vera gel
3 ½ cups 91% isopropyl alcohol (isopropyl is easier to find than ethyl)
10 - 20 drops of essential oil such as tea tree, lavender, oregano or lemon

Mix together and use a whisk or hand blender on high to aerate. The resulting liquid is not as thick as Purell or Germ-X. Both products use thickening agents called carbomer. The glycerin and aloe vera gel provides some thickening needed to slow down the evaporation of the alcohol on your hands.

(Thanks to Malisa for this great replacement for Antibacterial Gel - Malisa food blog for this recipe - link: http://concasse.blogspot.com/2009/05/homemade-hand-sanitizer-antibacterial.html)  Visit her blog she has some really great recipes having gone to culinary school in Colorado, she shares very creative and tasty selections.

To support and strengthen your immune system the use of holistic supplements can assist in cases where your body has already been compromised leaving you suffering from chronic illnesses.  I use this product to assist in keeping fibromyalgia from bothering me again.  It is a matter of finding out what works for you and setting a schedule to treat yourself till you find what your dose is.  Everyone is different and if your trip down life is in this body it is worth taking time to find what works best for you to have a good journey and make it there with the quality of life in top form.

Respect for your health part of formula for success.

Well I have returned being out for business traveling to many places.  Winter still upon us it brings to mind how important it is to take care to get good rest, eat well and exercise at least three times a week.  Many get caught up in the working mode and let lists of things to do and business get in the way of their family.  The self imposed pressure we set upon ourselves is compounded by how we push to get things done on time, be where we are expected to be or promised to be and as this goes on we lose sleep, miss meals, and our exercise becomes racing from one place to the other.  This is not always the case but when it becomes the norm, then it is time to stop and take a deep look in the mirror to re-assess our goals.

During my life I was fortunate to learn the martial arts from a very wise Sensei (instructor) who believed that before a student earned a rank or belt, the lesson must be learned, or the promotion of either is meaningless.  In the time that I trained, I worked hard and learned the benefit of how building a good foundation makes for a good structure.  The years that I spent taking a few hours out of each week in training taught me to depend on myself for what was needed and to respect myself overall.  I learned that following the training and building on my strengths would keep me strong and help build my character to be what I needed to be.  This carries weight in the concept of caring for self to remember that you cannot help others before you help yourself and the respect I mentioned is empirical to oneself first amongst all.

Health is an element in the formula for success.  It yields a winning solution when blended with Good Plan and Hard Work.  When you let one of them slip in importance your final end will not be what you worked so hard for and your time will be lost.  So, why share this with you?  To shed light on the importance of being true to yourself.  It gives you mental strength that brings you through all challenges that you may find bar your way.
Even in sickness, our mental strength helps to forge the way to wellness.  Linked all elements in this equation are part of the vessel that we through life build to take us to our destiny.

Believe in yourself, take care of yourself and all else will follow.  Anything is possible if you want it enough.

With schedules and commitments, why not benefit from the strongest antioxidant available while detoxing without side affects.  Twice daily, for a lifetime of health, and meeting schedules.  Allowing for family time and quality of life as part of your reward.

Not all Chocolate is bad for you.

I was watching the weather channel this morning as savored my cup of organic coffee, and the  forecaster a fit, middle aged woman was giving the status of next weeks COLD sweeping the nation and she made a statement to the effect that "...well just when we were saying Winter is over and it is time to stop eating chocolate and get back on the diet" that made me think about the difference between what chocolate used to be verses what it is now.  First of all, there is dark chocolate and milk chocolate.  Please understand that milk chocolate is just a candy with at best, chocolate or an extract flavoring added.  The rest is highly refined sugars, fillers, dyes and preservatives.   Long ago the large candy makes started to extract the cocoa butter from the beans and sell it to the cosmetic industry.  Replacing it with fillers, milk products and highly refined sugars and imitation flavorings.  So, why dark chocolate?

"In the past decade, studies proved that dark chocolate has many virtues, and, in moderation, can help stave off heart disease and cancer. It can even help you stay slim. There are 300 to 400 compounds in dark chocolate that can help you from head to toe, inside and outside of your body," said Orey, a health journalist who interviewed doctors, dietitians, and chocolatiers while researching her book.
In addition to life-threatening diseases, chocolate can also help with lesser ailments such as anxiety, depression, PMS, and seasonal affective disorder. Because of chocolate's antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins, you can get the same benefits as in red wine and vegetables," she says.
Orey says eating chocolate on a regular basis can add years to your life…possibly by at least five years."

This comment is made based on all the research currently being offered through studies and nutritional analysis that can become overwhelming when you search the web for information on the easiest way to support your health not to mention a health supplement you don't mind taking and rarely forget to take!

So, comparing the cost of your dark chocolates that are offered in stores, and that offered through wholesale discount stores is really a matter of computing what each piece costs and what it contains.  The statement that you get what you pay for is true for Dark Chocolate because of the way that the chocolate is grown, harvested, prepared and what is added to it for the final product.  We all base our decisions on taste, and on results and then on cost.  Some may argue but how many of us save up to purchase something we really like or something that we know will have the effect on us that we seek.

Introducing healthy chocolate which is organically grown, and low heat processed to allow for the bitterness to be taken out but to retain the nutritional values that make it the supplement of choice; offering positive health benefits from flavonol antioxidants.  Then to sweeten it with natural can sugar, so that it is low glycemic so it does not spike the insulin levels in even diabetics.  No caffeine needs to be added since Dark Chocolate contains Theobromine (xantheose) which has similar effects but is homologue.  In addition it helps to raise our serotonin level so we sleep better which is part of helping the body heal itself. Then the packaging, to assure the product makes it to the end user to give the full benefit and quality expected.  But what if, added to this already power house of antioxidants and nutrients, a detox element that yields pulling toxins out of the body while suffering zero side effects?

As one would imaging, the description then takes us to the next level and term of Vital Chocolate.  Vital because of the healing properties of both creating a synergy with the natural cellular defense drops to detox your system and unburden your body of toxins and stress.  The detox side uses a natural occurring mineral named zeolite, (clinoptilolite) which is micronized to enter the body at cellular levels and absorb any heavy metals, poisons, and parasites and carry them out of your body without side effects.

Two servings a day help to maintain your health and wellness.  Offered in monthly amounts at wholesale makes it affordable and the same you pay for fine chocolate at your local Cafe, Organic Food Store or Chocolatier.  Investing in your health now, is less expensive overall than paying for the cost of illness in any way shape and form.  As a good friend stated:  "...There is no medicine or doctor that can cure you, only your body can cure itself".  So a body unburdened by toxins, and stress has a good chance of reaching old age to enjoy it and those you love.
